What is CELTA?

The Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) is offered by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations Teaching Awards and has long been recognised as an excellent introduction to the EFL profession. It is intended for people who wish to enter the profession for the first time or for people with little teaching experience who wish to extend their knowledge.

The CELTA qualification gives:

  • Worldwide recognition as a qualified teacher of English as a Second Language
  • Knowledge of the English language, its grammar, phonology and lexis
  • Up-to-date methodology of language teaching to adults
  • A basis for later study at University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations Teaching Awards Diploma (DELTA) level

The qualification is highly regarded by employers, who value the practical emphasis of the training course, and it has enabled many successful candidates to obtain their first teaching position or to improve their career prospects.

Quality Assurance

To be validated, all centres offering CELTA courses are required to submit a training plan, timetable, details of assessment and other essential information to University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.

All CELTA course tutors have to be approved by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.

Each course is assessed in all aspects by an external assessor appointed by University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations.
