Examinations in English for Young Learners

Cambridge ESOL Examinations Young Learners English Tests

Building skills and confidence in English is the objective. The Tests are an ideal introduction to public examinations and for encouraging children to develop a positive attitude to language learning.

Children, their parents and their teachers are able to see real progress towards important internationally recognised qualifications. Research shows that children find the experience highly motivating.

Like the world’s principal qualifications in English for adults, they are run by Cambridge ESOL Examinations, part of the University of Cambridge.

Millions of children are learning English throughout the world to get a head start in language skills that they will need in their education, their working lives and many leisure activities. More than 200,000 of them in over 50 countries take these Tests every year. Now, for the first time, we are able to make them available to Costa Ricans.

The Tests are carefully designed to be as enjoyable and stress-free as possible with activities that are familiar to most children, an attractive presentation in full-colour and easy-to-follow instructions.

The Tests are available at three levels, each of which has three sections: Listening, Reading and Writing, and Speaking.

Levels
Starters - designed for children from the age of 7
Movers - typical candidates are likely to be aged between 8 and 11
Flyers - likely to be aged between 9 and 12

Nobody ‘fails’ but rather every child who takes a Test receives an official Award showing how they performed in each of the three parts and indicating both strengths and areas for improvement.

Research shows that children find these awards highly motivating, which can make a big difference to their attitude to language learning in general.

For further information about the Tests available at IH Costa Rica Instituto Britanico, see Dates and Prices.
