English for young learners

School Year Courses

Young learnersSchool Year courses, which are designed to match young people's conceptual development and natural learning patterns, follow a cross-curricular approach. This means learning about stimulating topics that also happen to be in English, topics that often reflect what students study in Spanish at school. Activities providing the integrated development of the four language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) are involving, appropriate to age groups, and include the variety necessary to maintain young learners' attention. Students also become aware of how they learn, bringing an extra dimension to their appreciation and their future learning habits.

Groups are small so that individuals receive the maximum attention and also have the opportunity to participate to the full. To provide topics, activities and language appropriate to students' age and development, we offer courses divided into cycles by age group.

Young learners Preschool Cycle

The first cycle is for students of 5 and 6 years. Based on speaking and listening activities, this course is especially suitable for students who do not yet know how to read or write. It includes a range of practical activities designed to develop students' knowledge of, for example, the alphabet, numbers, colours and shapes, helping them to make descriptions of the world around them. Course codes: P-1 to P-4.

School Cycle

The second cycle provides the opportunity for students from 7 to 11 to expand their grammatical knowledge in parallel with their speaking and listening skills in the same natural way that they acquire their first language. They also start to appreciate the learning process, enabling them to develop personal learning strategies for second language acquisition. Course codes: E-1 to E-8.

Young learners Secondary Cycle

The third cycle, is for students from 12 to 16, who learn to develop the means for dealing with the real world in English. Using all four language skills in integrated activities, they gain the means to use their English in contexts that are realistic and practical, building their confidence and their knowledge at the same time and preparing them for life outside the classroom. Course codes: S-1 to S-10.

School Year Courses follow the school year with a twenty-week semestre from February to December and have a two-week break in July. They offer a choice of schedules to allow students to fit in their English studies with their other commitments. Students attend one class a week, from Monday to Friday in the afternoon or on Saturday morning. Classes for the Preschool cycle are 2 hours; for School and Secondary cycles, classes are 3 hours.

See Schedules and prices for details.

Textbooks for these courses can be obtained at the Instituto Reception.
