About Instituto Britanico Founded almost 20 years ago by British teachers, we are a private educational institution dedicated to the teaching of English and Spanish. Every term more than 1,000 students enrol in our classes, either on an individual basis or through company contracts, many of them motivated to improve their professional prospects by acquiring another language. Our school is conveniently located in Los Yoses, a very pleasant area of the capital only minutes from the city centre and the University of Costa Rica, with a good selection of restaurants, shops and entertainment close by. Our main building is in a charming old house with classrooms arranged around a large walled garden where students enjoy their free time in the open-sided cafeteria. We also operate an annex on the western side of the city. Authorised centre of examinations For people intending to study or work abroad, Instituto Britanico is, uniquely in Central America, the official examination centre for a number of internationally recognised qualifications for adults. We can also now offer an international qualification for young learners. Further information about this is given in International Examinations on the Instituto Britanico Home Page. Instituto Britanico also has its own English evaluation exam developed to satisfy a local need in both the public and private sectors for an independent appraisal of competence in English, which is used to select personnel for overseas training and scholarships. Also our internal exams are recognised by the Costa Rican Civil Service as evidence of proficiency in English, earning their holders an additional increment in salary. Services Students are encouraged to immerse themselves in English as much as possible outside the classroom. The new Study Centre at Instituto Britanico includes a library, a quiet area to work, and computers with Internet access. The library has a small but varied selection of graded readers appropriate to the various levels of study, together with reference books, current editions of magazines and newspapers and an extensive teacher resource collection. Reception is open from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, Monday to Friday, and from 8:00 AM to 12:00 MD on Saturday. Beside the garden we have a cafe selling drinks and snacks where you can meet your friends before class and relax in the coffee break.
